Uganda has serious mountain adventures. The Rwenzori Mountains, the “Mountains of the Moon”, rise to Margherita Peak at 5,109 m, the third-highest point in Africa, with glaciers, lakes and unique plants.
For shorter hikes, the Virunga volcanoes in Mgahinga — Muhavura, Sabinyo and Gahinga — can each be climbed in a day, and Mount Elgon in the east offers gentler multi-day treks.
Where to do it
- Rwenzori Mountains National Park — Margherita Peak and shorter loop treks
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — Muhavura, Sabinyo and Gahinga
- Mount Elgon National Park — caves, waterfalls and the Wagagai summit
